The unfortunate reality is that terrorism, both domestic and international, has made our world increasingly unsafe. To survive one of these attack, you must be prepared. Here we will present some standard protocols you will need to consider employing as part of your active shooter policy.
In general, you want to ensure that anyone in your responsibility knows that the best approach to a shooting is to first run, then hide and last, if necessary, fight back.
- Running
Escaping the situation is the best means of survival. You want everyone to understand that they should first try to run away from the assailant. Never attempt to engage the terrorist unless absolutely necessary.
Have them leave all belongings and find the quickest escape route. Once in a safe place, call 911 to inform the authorities. Others may be unable to run and will need help to arrive as fast as possible.
- Hiding
During an ongoing terrorist attack, potential victims should, after running, try to hide. Get out of sight. If in a closed space, lock the door you can. Place large objects, such as tables or chairs, underneath the door knob to prevent the assailant from entering the room.
A common mistake is to leave cell phones on. These devices can give you away. Remember that family and friends may have heard about the shooting on television or via the internet and may try to call you. The ring will inform the shooter of your position.
- Fighting Back
If you cannot run or hide, then it is time to go on the attack. When training your people always tell them that fighting is a last resort. However, when engaging in combat never hold back. The perpetrator is a dangerous criminal, out to commit murder. Staging a half-hearted attack is worse than doing nothing at all. Once the fight is on, try your best to incapacitate the intruder. Though it is hard to do, you must remain calm.
Introducing Your Active Shooter Policy
You may face some difficulties getting others to participate in active shooter preparedness training. Some believe thinking about such a violent circumstance a bit too negative. Always inform these individuals that if an attack does happen, life decisions will have to be made in mere seconds. The active shooter policy is a means of ensuring that your colleagues survive the attack. They can then go home to their loved ones, which is all everyone wants to do.
